DJ DUCATS
With more than a decade under his
belt and a devoted nature towards the preservation of
rap music, DJ Ducats (as in money and pronounced
duck-its) brings nothing but flavour to the game. On
the two turntables and vast knowledge of Hip-Hop
music, he's in the zone and on nothing but a peaceful
journey.
His beginnings as a DJ found him
involved with a group of three emcees doing shows
around the city and many studio sessions with soon to
be famous producers. Bouncing from gig to gig, studio
to radio station Ducats didn't break step once from
spinning Hip-Hop. From near the beginning he grew
close to certain people for support and guidance as
well as to bounce ideas off of. Great inspiration and
knowledge came from his mix-tape days. Making many
tapes with DJ Dave C. as well as another long time
friend Koke Man whom now assists in the day to day
grind that producers Midi Mafia work on the
super-star level of things.
His longest and weekly gig at the
University radio station CKCU, on the Peaceful
Journey, found Ducats working alongside some of
Canada's top industry heads, Mikey Wizdom &
Jedi-One. Both of which now run the successful record
company "Soul Clap Records" in Toronto. But members
and guests of Peaceful Journey didn't stop there,
with DJ / Promoters such as Mista Sho, Tante,
E-Large, Drastik, Illo, Mr. Ok, Tech Twelve, El-K,
Scott Boogie and many others passing through the
Journey doors on occasions.
After proving himself as a dope DJ
and building his presence Ducats also opened up and
worked with such acts as The Pharcyde, DJ Mastermind,
Kardinal Offishall, Brassmunk, Assanni and others as
well as holding things down for many of the battles
and performances in Ottawa. Radio shows would include
fill-ins and guest appearances on DJ El-K's "One For
All", DJ Rude Boy, Flintstone & Ben Jammin's
"Late Nite Jeep Beats", "The Flava Zone ft. The
Blunted Dummies", Daddy Rich's "Nightshift" and
several others.
All in all, Ducats has been
spinning some of the freshest joints to grace
listeners in the greater Ottawa area for years. With
a collection of some 5000 pieces of vinyl and dozens
of interviews with artists & groups such as
Classified, Blackmoon, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed
Muhammed, Dead Prez, Guru of Gangstarr, Krumb
Snatcha, Checkmate, Rahzel and Non-Phixion, Ducats is
certainly someone to watch for. These days dabbling
in production, engineering and media to keep himself
busy, he still seems to find time to do what he does
best, rock the one's n' two's on the radio. With
several shows on his list, he maintains Ottawa's only
primetime rap show, Peacful Journey.
